Hello, my names Orna, and I’ve been a professional gardener for the past 18 years…

Specialising in ornamental horticulture, I’ve been running my own garden business for the last decade. Carrying out Garden design, development and maintenance throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians - from tiny New town City gardens, to traditional double borders in large country gardens. I love what I do, and feel very privileged to do it.

Background

I trained at the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens, and hold a Diploma in Plantsmanship: HERE . From there I completed a Historical and Botanical Garden placement focusing on Planting design in Cambo Gardens in Fife: HERE . This was one of the most pivotol moments in my career to date, which really showed me what ornamental planting, and horticulture could be!

It was an incredible year spent saturating in art and design theory, planting design, and historic gardening. What I learnt during this time really forms the backbone of what I do now - whether designing, consulting or working with other gardeners.

From here I went on to become a Head Gardener at an Arts and Crafts destination hotel, before finally deciding to start my own business.

Other interesting experiences in between include interning at Laos Botanical Gardens, developing and running a cut flower business, training as a florist, and creating Wedding florals for clients. I’ve maintained gardens for some of Edinburgh’s top designers, and I’ve also spent time working under glass - maintaining indoor plant collections for display, and in specialist plant nurserys. Growing thousands of seedlings for annual displays, from sowing, and pricking out, to final planting. I’ve planted thousands, and thousands of bulbs, and mulched many borders….

While I love all of the above, what I am most passionate about is the the artistic side of gardening.. . I see my garden as a canvas and I love apply the principles of Art and design to the daily, and seasonal tasks which comprise the craft gardening: the Art and Craft of Gardening itself.
